The story of this world-famous cocktail began in 1954 in the Caribbean, at one of the Hilton hotels. Its refreshing, rich taste quickly gained popularity, and in 1978 it was officially declared the national drink—and symbol—of sunny Puerto Rico.
At Hilton hotels around the world, we come together on July 10 to honour this iconic cocktail, originally created over 70 years ago by Ramón "Monchito" Marrero, a talented bartender at Caribe Hilton in Puerto Rico.
When crafting the original recipe—meant to be a welcome drink for hotel guests—Marrero reached for local ingredients, combining rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice. The result was an instant classic, perfectly reflecting the energy and flavour of the Caribbean.
